JTAG is a serial protocol, similar to SPI in some respects, that is used for boundary scan testing, in circuit emulation, and flash programming. It is standardized in IEEE 1149.1-1990. In boundary scan mode, all the I/O pins on all JTAG devices on a board may be connected together in one giant shift register with one or more bits per pin. There are control registers and ways to bypass the shift register for individual devices (replacing them with a one bit register).
The picture above shows a slightly ficticious chip with a simple 8 bit D-flip flop register with clock and output enable controls with a JTAG TAP (Test Access Port) controller and 18 boundary cells, one on each I/O pin, added. The boundary cells are connected together in a big daisy chain loop. It shows only the data path in that loop, there are a number of control signals as well. Individual chips are then connected together in a longer loop. It says that the chip is ficticious but there are similar parts: TI SN74BCT8374A is almost identical. The amount of test logic on such a simple device far exceeds the amount of operational logic.
JTAG is not an open standard in the sense that internet RFCs and USB are and the way all standards should be, where you can download the standard documents for free. Instead, they fund the standards process by selling copies of the standards documents.
JTAG is availible on far fewer chips than it should be. It is found on most FPGAs, CPLDs, better microcontrollers and processors, and some peripherals. It still isn’t available on gates and most other discrete logic parts; there are a few overpriced registers and bus transceivers with JTAG, similar to the one pictured above. But it is several times cheaper to replace those parts with a CPLD and instead of needing glue logic to drive the logic chip, you can reprogram the CPLD to be compatible with your signals and maybe suck in some extra glue logic as well. Now that some of the programable logic vendors provide free (as in beer) software, small logic parts are mostly obsolete. And to take best advantage of JTAG for testability, you will want to use programable logic and microcontrollers instead of discrete logic. And JTAG is widely used, beyond its original intended purpose, for programming those microcontrollers and programmable logic devices.

What JTAG can do?

Here are things JTAG can do or potentially do:

Boundary scan test of connections between JTAG compliant ICs and boards.
Test of logic connected between JTAG devices
In system programming of flash based FPGAs, CPLDs, and other progammable logic. Parts can also be programmed while installed in a zif socket with a JTAG connector.
Temporary configuration of ram based FPGAs and other programmable logic
Loading FPGA or CPLD bitstreams into JTAG enabled serial configuration flash devices (such as Xilinx Platform Flash) used to configure FPGAs on reset.
Loading code into JTAG enabled parallel flash chips (if you can find one)
Loading code into FLASH memory devices that are not JTAG enabled by manipulating address, data, and control lines on other JTAG enabled chips (such as a micro or CPLD). This can be very inefficient and slow (possible workarounds listed below).
In system (or Zif) programming of Microcontrollers.
Test that internal logic of a chip conforms to specifications, provided you have a model or test vectors.
Detailed internal chip testing with internal cells inserted to allow breaking the design into smaller, testable pieces.
On chip debugging (hardware assisted debugger built into micro). Breakpoints, single stepping, memory examine/change, etc.
Test of external connectors on a board, provided you have JTAG devices to connect it to such as a JTAG based test fixture, other JTAG enabled boards that normally connect to the board, loopback connections, or have connected bidirectional I/Os between two similar boards together.
De-brick routers, motherboards, etc. after a botched firmware download.
Communicate with logic or software inside a micro, FPGA, CPLD, or other programable logic provided that the chip provides JTAG accessable data registers.
Check jumper settings to digital logic to check if board is jumpered to factory configuration before shipping.
Eliminate jumpers in many applications.
Production programming and test of assembled boards. You can test the solder connections, download Microcontroller, FPGA, and CPLD firmware, and perform basic (low frequency) testing of board logic. All in a single operation with hookup to one or two jtag connectors. You may also be able to set the real time clock by twiddling SPI or I2C pins.
Measure supply voltages, if you have a JTAG ADC on board.
Trim boards, if you can find a JTAG DAC or have a DAC or digital potentiometer driven from programmable logic.
Design one board to be used for multiple functions reducing design, NRE, and inventory costs and achieving better economy of scale. Board can be personalized just in time for shipment.
Update or reconfigure systems in the field. You can send a technician with a PDA or LAPTOP, send JTAG pod and software to customer, ship a small inexpensive device with flash memory and a microcontroller that acts as a JTAG player, or design the system to perform self upgrades.
Build in USB JTAG for easy field upgrades.
Do built in self test by providing a mechanism for an onboard micro to access the JTAG chain.
Perform analog tests (limited number of devices support 1149.4, though).
Re-purpose off the shelf devices to serve new applications the designer may not have even imagined.
Perform basic RAM tests.
Software developers may be able to use JTAG to produce a partial netlist sufficient to describe the connectivity information needed for software development.
JTAG could be used to program nonvolatile „fuses” on IIC bus devices to set the node address, thereby overcoming the achiles heal of IIC.

Limitations

Attempts to use JTAG in the ways described above can be hampered by:

Standards which aren’t free
Commercial software that is too expensive for many applications and which may be difficult to modify or extend.
„free” software that is either too limited in function or has a copyleft license that prevents you from owning your own enhancements which may contain sensitive information or substantial value added.
Limited part availability. Obtuse semiconductor manufacturers often omit JTAG when the marginal cost would be negligable or even negative (due to enhanced testability) or when JTAG might substantially increase part sales and/or allow one part to replace many.
JTAG pods which lack adequate documentation.
Software that will only work with PODs supplied by the software vendor.
For the most part, JTAG can not be used to perform high speed functional testing although it may assist in configuration for such testing by setting mode pins to appropriate states or downloading test code to programmable devices capable of high speed signal generation and checking.
Many pods are cable of far less than the 20Mbps allowed by the standard which limits certain applications like programming large flash devices via bit twiddling of attached chips.
Different connectors used on different products.
Programable logic vendors who don’t provide easy ways to reconfigure parts without resynthesis which is needed to trim parts or make minor (software jumper) configuration changes.
JTAG boundary scan was designed in the days of TTL logic which had asymetric drive. If two pins were shorted together and you drove a 0 on one and a 1 on the other, you would usually get a consistent 0 as a result. With many modern logic families the result is far less predictable. This could be improved with programmable pull-up and pull-down combined with output and I/O cells that can be operated in open drain or tristate mode and/or receivers that have multiple thresholds. A part may even have these features in normal operation but they may not be available via JTAG.
Components such as pull-up resistors may not be adequately tested.

The company RCS / RDS, the Romanian operator Digi TV satellite platform, by replacing old code Nagravision 2 cards for the new operating system Media Access Nagra (N3 – Nagravision 3). George „Geohot” Hotz ha vinto la sua battaglia: in un post pubblicato oggi sul suo blog, l’hacker divenuto famoso per aver crackato a suo tempo iPhone, conferma di aver violato le protezioni della console Sony, e rende disponibile in Rete il programma utilizzato per controllare l’intero sistema.

Secondo Hotz, l’exploit garantisce pieno accesso alla memoria e al processore, in lettura e in scrittura, permettendo quindi di gestire completamente le risorse interne della console. Il software sarebbe stato testato solo su firmware 2.4.2, ma l’hacker statunitense afferma che, verosimilmente, funzionerà anche con le versioni più recenti. La chiave per vincere la battaglia? Una falla nel sistema che permette di installare su PlayStation 3 una distro Linux, attraverso la quale Hotz è riuscito a violare il codice chiave del processore, il cosiddetto HyperVision, teoricamente accessibile ai soli ingegneri Sony e IBM.

Allo stato attuale, nessuna applicazione amatoriale è stata ancora pubblicata per PlayStation 3. È inoltre prevista la partecipazione di autorevoli persone della società civile e della blogosfera che non cito per evitare di dimenticare qualcuno o escludere chi ancora non ha confermato la sua presenza. H. Edward Roberts, considerato da molti il vero inventore del personal computer, è morto in un ospedale della Georgia per polmonite. Aveva 68 anni. Roberts aveva creato a metà degli anni 70 l’Altair 8800, il primo modello di pc che, in un’epoca in cui gli elaboratori elettronici erano ancora grandi come armadi, occupava solo parte di una scrivania. Tra coloro che riconoscevano a Roberts il ruolo di pioniere c’era anche Bill Gates, che è andato a trovare l’inventore in ospedale in Georgia, saputo che le sue condizioni stavano peggiorando, pochi giorni prima della sua morte. Gates aveva sempre raccontato di essere stato ispirato da una immagine del computer Altair vista nel 1975 sulla copertina della rivista Popular Electronics.

Gates aveva creato il suo primo Microsoft Basic proprio per Roberts e si era trasferito in New Mexico, dopo avere abbandonato Harvard, per lavorare per lui prima di fondare, insieme a Paul Allen, la compagnia che lo avrebbe reso miliardario. Ben diverso era stato il destino economico di Roberts che nel 1977 aveva venduto la compagnia di computer impegnandosi inoltre a stare fuori per cinque anni dal settore. L’ingegnere aveva investito i soldi ricevuti in terreni agricoli in Georgia.

Ma dopo alcuni anni, stufo dell’agricoltura, aveva inseguito un altro sogno di gioventù mettendosi a studiare per diventare medico. Roberts, nato nel settembre 1941 a Miami, figlio di un’infermiera, aveva iniziato a studiare medicina ma era rimasto folgorato all’Università di Miami dall’idea di creare una macchina cuore-polmoni. Il progetto aveva spostato i suoi interessi dalla medicina all’elettronica. Si era messo a studiare ingegneria elettronica e aveva cominciato a lavorare con i giganteschi elaboratori IBM che all’epoca occupavano una intera stanza.

Il giovane ingegnere era convinto che sarebbe stato possibile un giorno «dare un computer ad ogni personà. E così si era messo a lavorare al leggendario Altair, considerato da molti il primo modello di personal computer. Anche se il titolo di inventore del personal computer è stato attribuito in passato a più persone, almeno per Bill Gates non ci sono dubbi: il riconoscimento spetta solo a Roberts.

Vevo, the premium online video service from YouTube, attracted 43.6 million viewers in April, representing a quarter of the US online video audience. The figure includes viewing from the Vevo channel on YouTube, said research institute comScore. Vevo was only launched last December.

US internet users watched 30.3 billion videos in April, with Google Sites ranking as the top video property with 13.1 billion videos, representing 43.2% of all videos viewed online. YouTube accounted for the vast majority of videos viewed at the property.

Hulu ranked second with 958 million videos, or 3.2% of all online videos viewed. Microsoft Sites ranked third with 644 million (2.1%, followed by Viacom Digital with 384 million (1.3%) and Yahoo! Sites with 371 million (1.2%).

Nearly 178 million viewers watched an average of 171 videos per viewer during the month of April. Google Sites attracted 136.3 million unique viewers during the month (96.0 videos per viewer), followed by Yahoo! Sites with 49.5 million viewers (7.5 videos per viewer), and Fox Interactive Media with 43.8 million viewers (7.3 videos per viewer). Vevo jumped four positions in the April ranking taking the number four spot with 43.6 million viewers, an average of 7.6 videos per viewer.

BBC HD launches on CYFRA+

MPAA website boarded by pirates

The Motion Picture Association of America’s website was temporarily brought down over the weekend by pirates enraged by an escalation in anti-piracy efforts. MPAA.org and the website of AiPlex Software, a company the MPAA hired to target websites where piracy was rampant, were out of action for much of the day.

“The MPAA is aware of the illegal attack and has taken measures to mitigate the effect of any denial-of-service attack,” said the MPAA spokesman, who confirmed that the trade body was able to get its site back online.

Responsibility for the attacks was claimed on the message-board group 4chan – a supposed hotbed for piracy activity. The offensive seems to have been prompted by a statement AiPlex made earlier in the month regarding the ramping up of its own efforts to counter torrent sites trafficking in copyright-infringing content.

Orange Sport in talks with ESPN

ESPN is reportedly in discussions with France Telecom to purchase the Orange Sport network. Details of the transaction, reported by Le Point, have yet to be finalized, but there are suggestions that a deal may be completed as early as November 1. This would leave time for a bid in the next round of rights to the French football league.

However, the publication suggests that ESPN does not want to compete directly against Canal+ in the premium sports market, a move that may pose more of a challenge to Eurosport in pay-basic.

In the UK, ESPN entered the premium sports market in 2009, following the collapse of Setanta Sports. Although positioned as premium on the Sky satellite platform, it is also available free-of-charge to subscribers of Virgin Media’s big basic package.

Following the announcement by France Telecom CEO Stéphane Richard that Orange would in future seek “content partnerships”, a partnership with Canal+ for the Orange Cinema Series is already close to fruition. It is also believed that Orange would no longer bid for rights to the French Ligue 1, leaving governing body LFP considering taking over Orange Sport itself.

Severina Pascu, the current CFO of UPC Romania, will assume the position of MD, UPC Romania, as of January 1, 2011. Ms. Pascu will replace the current MD, Jack Mikaloff, who will retire at the end of 2010.

Jack Mikaloff said: “I am proud of this team and I know it will be in capable hands going forward. I am happy to have Severina as my successor. She is a remarkable leader and has been instrumental to the development of UPC over the last three years. I’m sure that the people behind this company will continue to exceed objectives and make new breakthroughs under her leadership.”

Jack Mikaloff assumed the MD position of UPC Romania in 2008; before that time he held various positions at Liberty Global and its predecessor companies, including the management of UPC Business Services and UPC France.

Gene Musselman, president and COO of UPC Broadband, said in a statement: “Jack has been a good friend and a first class operator, staying the course in various demanding assignments for the company. His talents will be missed but I respect his decision after a career of forty years and more than a decade of dedication to our group. With Severina we will have an experienced cable veteran with strong knowledge of the local market.”

Severina Pascu has been CFO of UPC Romania since 2008. Between 2005 and 2008 she worked as director corporate finance CAIB Romania, one of the leading investment banks in central Europe. Between 2000 and 2005 she worked for the American cable company Metromedia International, holding several senior positions in Romania and UK. She started her professional career in 1996 with KPMG working in Romania and UK. Severina is an economist and graduated at the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies.

Romanian pay-TV market slumps

ACC CONVENTION – BUCHAREST. The number of subscribers to pay-TV services in Romania suffered an unexpected fall in the first half of this year.

Speaking in the opening session at this year’s ACC Convention, Catalin Marinescu, president National Authority for Communications (ANCOM), said that at the end of June there were 5.73 million receiving cable, DTH and IPTV services, compared to 5.82 million at the end of 2009.

He added that the number DTH subscribers over the period fell from 2.33 million to 2.26 million.

The total number of digital subscribers (cable, DTH and IPTV) meanwhile stood at 2.6 million at the end of H1, and of these 350,000 received digital cable services. This was 10% more than at the end of 2009.

Although take-up of IPTV services grew by 17% in the first six months of this year, it still only accounted for 0.2% of the pay-TV market at the end of June.

Eutelsat commissions W3D satellite

Eutelsat has announced that Thales Alenia Space has been commissioned to build the W3D satellite that will replace the W3B spacecraft lost after its launch on October 28. The delivery schedule of the new 56-transponder satellite has been fixed to 24 months, enabling Eutelsat to plan for commercial availability from early 2013.

Based on the Spacebus 4000 platform of Thales Alenia Space, W3D will be copositioned with Eutelsat’s W3A satellite at 7° East to expand operational capacity at this longstanding location to 70 transponders from 44. These additional resources will enable existing customers to expand their business, will increase in-orbit security and inject new capacity to 7° East to capture business opportunities in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia.

Michel de Rosen, Eutelsat CEO, said in a statement: “Working in close collaboration with industry, Eutelsat is now pushing ahead with timely delivery of W3C to 16° East in mid-2011 and has started the clock on the W3D programme which will be completed in 24 months. Our clear objective is to apply to both programmes all appropriate recommendations of the Inquiry Board currently investigating the loss of W3B. Even as the Inquiry Board continues its work, we are already implementing measures to tighten control of industry’s manufacturing processes.”

W3D satellite will deliver three key coverage zones: High-power Ku-band coverage of Europe with a beam centred over Central Europe and Turkey particularly optimised for Direct-to-Home (DTH) reception; Extensive coverage across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East as far as Central Asia, via a Ku-band beam for professional video links and data networks; Ku-band coverage of Sub-Saharan Africa and Indian Ocean islands for regional telecommunications and Internet services. Interconnection with Europe will also be possible with the African coverage through a combination of Ka-band frequencies in Europe and Ku-band frequencies in Africa.

From a financial standpoint, W3D replaces the W3B satellite programme that was fully covered by insurance.

Il nuovo firmware, arrivato alla versione 3.55, è disponibile da oggi e ufficialmente risolve alcuni problemi non specificati relativi alla sicurezza. Da alcuni test effettuati sembra che renda impossibile effettuare il downgrade, in modo da non permettere il jailbreak della console.

La Playstation 3 si aggiorna al firmware 3.55, da oggi disponibile per il download a tutti i possessori della console Sony. L’update è soltanto una patch che risolve alcuni problemi relativi alla sicurezza, secondo quanto affermato sul blog ufficiale statunitense.

Si suppone che dietro questi misteriosi problemi di sicurezza ci sia il tentativo da parte di Sony di arginare il fenomeno del PS Downgrade (PS Downgrade: PS3 perde il derby con gli hacker). Sembra infatti che dai primi test condotti da alcuni siti, non sia possibile effettuare il downgrade partendo da questo firmware, con la conseguenza di non poter più leggere le copie di backup dei giochi usando il famoso PS Jailbreak.

Questo è soltanto l’ennesimo capitolo di questa vicenda, che in questi mesi ha visto un vero e proprio tira e molla con vittorie degli hacker da un lato (PSGroove, l’hack open source per la Playstation 3 e PS Jailbreak, Homebrew e backup di giochi per la PS3) e di Sony dall’altro (Firmware e giochi PS3 per dare fastidio alla pirateria e Sony contro il Jailbreak PS3, rivenditori nel mirino).

Al momento, Sony ha guadagnato un punticino, dato che per potersi connettere al Playstation Network e sfruttare le potenzialità online della console è obbligatoria l’installazione del nuovo firmware.

La mossa segue il recente rilascio di Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0. Con l’interruzione del programma vanno a morire anche crack e aggiornamenti sviluppati per sconfiggere la protezione e questo controllo antipirateria (chiamato da Windows, appunto, „di genuinità”).

Prima di essere confermata da Microsoft, la novità era stata notata dagli osservatori e da coloro che avevo tentato di convalidare la propria copia con il servizio: un messaggio di errore interrompeva la procedura,”Impossibile convalidare” oppure „Codice errore: 0x8018111”. Da Redmond, tuttavia, non sono arrivati ulteriori dettagli, né sulle motivazioni dell’abbandono, né sulla possibilità di novità simili anche per l’altro strumento di lotta alla contraffazione, Windows Genuine Advantage, che continua ad essere utilizzato.

Resta inoltre attivo il processo di attivazione di Office e la sua validazione. Mentre, dunque, il processo di download di aggiunte e template diventa più semplice e senza ostacoli, vi è ancora un controllo da parte di Microsoft sulle copie della sua suite per ufficio sospettate di non essere originali: lo strumento, inizialmente attivo su Office 2010 e previsto come misura per individuare eventuali file corrotti o potenzialmente pericolosi per il PC, da poco è stato esteso per le versioni Office 2003 e 2007.

È tempo di spegnere la seconda candelina per Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), l’antimalware di Redmond che nel giro di un anno ha saputo conquistarsi la sua bella fetta di popolarità tra gli utenti del mondo Windows. Dopo il rilascio della prima versione ufficiale nel settembre del 2009, MSE arriva ora alla release 2.0 con un buon numero di novità e funzionalità aggiuntive.

MSE 2.0 porta in dote soprattutto un nuovo engine euristico, grazie al quale Microsoft sostiene di aver migliorato la capacità del tool di individuare virus, worm e codice malevolo sconosciuti o ad alto livello di polimorfismo. Con il nuovo motore Redmond si mette in pari con la concorrenza, visto che gli engine euristici altamente avanzati sono da tempo la norma nel panorama dei software antivirali gratuiti per Windows.

Un’altra, importante novità di MSE 2.0 è la sua più stretta integrazione con i sottosistemi di Windows, in particolare Vista e 7: l’antimalware è ora in grado di manipolare il firewall di sistema all’interno dell’interfaccia di programma, e di monitorare il traffico di rete interfacciandosi alla Windows Filtering Platform presente nelle ultime versioni dell’OS di Redmond.

MSE è ora in grado di riconoscere le minacce telematiche durante la navigazione – una caratteristica aggiuntiva che in genere non è presente negli antivirus in versione freeware – e di bloccare gli script malevoli che tentassero di oltrepassare le tecnologie difensive del browser Internet Explorer.

Disponibile per il download sui server Microsoft, MSE 2.0 è un software gratuito per l’utente finale e le piccole imprese con meno di 10 PC. Le aziende di maggiori dimensioni dovranno invece rivolgersi alla linea di prodotti commerciali Forefront, basata sulla stessa tecnologia antimalware integrata in MSE. Non è un caso, a tal proposito, che Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 sia stato rilasciato in contemporanea con MSE 2.0

PS3 senza barriere: gli hacker hanno vinto

Le ultime difese introdotte da sony sulla PS3 sono durate davvero poco: lo stesso hacker che ha bucato la Wii ha annunciato la scoperta della „chiave” di PS3.

Lo scopo è nobile: poter di nuovo usare linux come sistema operativo sulla PS3. Peccato che per raggiungere questo scopo (ma era davvero quello?) uno dei più famosi hacker nel mondo delle console ha fatto cadere anche l’ultima barriera della Playstation 3, ovvero ha trovato la chiave di crittografia che Sony usa per firmare digitalmente i giochi e le applicazioni ufficiali.

Se la notizia fosse confermata vuol dire che gli sviluppatori potrebbero realizzare qualsiasi programma o gioco o copia e firmandolo con la chiave trovata la PS3 lo leggerebbe senza problema, proprio come un programma originale. Una soluzione questa che non può essere bloccata con un upgrade del firmware, anche perché se si cambia la chiave tutti i giochi sul mercato non sarebbero poi più utilizzabili.

Uno scenario decisamente terribile, perché vuol dire non solo linux (e fin qui va bene) ma anche le famose “copie di backup” dei giochi. Un nome che nasconde un atto di pirateria, ma suona decisamente meglio.

L’hacker ha promesso a breve un software che permette di applicare la chiave a tutti i programmi.

La società messa in liquidazione
Dahlia Tv sarà messa in liquidazione. Lo hanno deciso i soci riuniti in assemblea ”preso atto – si legge in una nota – che è intervenuta una causa di scioglimento della società”. L’assemblea ha ”conseguentemente deliberato la nomina di un liquidatore con il compito di elaborare a breve un piano di liquidazione”. Per il momento però i programmi dell’emittente proseguiranno.

La decisione è stata presa per garantire gli abbonati che hanno già pagato per i mesi a venire. „A seguito del mutato scenario di mercato che ha reso insostenibile lo sviluppo del proprio business – si legge in una nota diffusa al termine dell’assemblea -, gli azionisti di Dahlia Tv hanno deciso di mettere in liquidazione la societa’ – spiega un comunicato – Non sono ancora state assunte decisioni in merito alla prosecuzione delle trasmissioni, che per il momento seguiranno la normale programmazione”.

La preoccupazione ora è soprattutto sul fronte occupazionale. I lavoratori di Filmaster hanno emesso un comunicato nel quale sottolineano la „fine di un’avventura iniziata, sotto ogni buon auspicio, meno di due anni fa. Una storia di lavoro animata prevalentemente dalla passione di ciascuno dei dipendenti dell’indotto, gli stessi che il 17 dicembre scorso avevano lanciato un appello che non ha avuto alcuna risposta. Nonostante la grave situazione i giornalisti e l’intero corpo produttivo hanno preferito non tradire i propri telespettatori abbonati garantendo comunque i servizi essenziali e non ricorrendo al diritto di ogni lavoratore allo sciopero che avrebbe penalizzato ulteriormente quanti hanno scelto di sottoscrivere un abbonamento a Dahlia Tv”.

Digi drops HBO channels

The DTH platform Digi TV has announced that it will no longer be carrying four HBO channels in the Czech Republic.

In a statement, the platform said that it regrets that as of January 11 HBO, HBO2, HBO Comedy and Cinemax will be removed from its offer due to “unacceptable financial demands if the licensor, which would harm our society and especially you, our customers, through an unacceptable increase in retail prices.”

Digi TV is operated by Romania’s RCS/RDS and has a presence in six CEE countries including the Czech Republic.

In the Czech Republic, in competes with the DTH platforms Skylink, CS Link and UPC Direct, as well as a service operated by T-Mobile and launched late last year.

UPC Romania speculation mounts

RCS&RDS is reported to be close to acquiring UPC Romania from Liberty Global for a fee of around $300 million (€217.8 million). Quoting market sources, ZF says that the entrepreneur Zoltan Teszari, who holds a 43% stake RCS&RDS, is in the process of selecting the bank to finance any possible deal, having already held talks with Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley since late last year.

There has been speculation about the future of UPC Romania for some time, fuelled by a gradual loss of subscribers in the face of strong competition from RCS&RDS, Romania’s leading cable and DTH operator, and the incumbent telco Romtelecom.

Liberty Global hired the investment bank Rothschilds last year to find a solution for UPC Romania, whose value was initially put at $700 million.

Should UPC Romania be sold to RCS&RDS, the latter would become the undisputed market leader, providing TV services alone to around 4 million homes.

Although any deal would have to be approved by the country’s Competition Council, it has yet to overrule any transaction involving RCS&RDS.

When contacted about the possible sale of UPC Romania, a spokesman for Liberty Global told Broadband TV News that, “we do not comment on market speculation”.

Hillary Clinton says US is “losing the information war”

During a speech in Washington a few hours ago, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that the US is “losing the information war”. She said that Al Jazeera is “winning”, and that both China and Russia have invested in round-the-clock English news channels. She said that she herself has watched the Russian channel – RT – and found it ‘instructive’. She then went on to point out that the US is cutting back its international broadcasting effort, and so is the BBC.

Mrs Clinton’s comments took the staff of Al Jazeera English by surprise, as they do not consider themselves to be “at war” with media from other countries. It seems to me that Mrs Clinton is perpetuating the obfuscation that results from insufficient distinction between international broadcasting and public diplomacy. I can understand why she mentioned the Chinese and Russian channels, which do indeed have a propaganda role as well as an information role, but having watched Al Jazeera extensively over the past several weeks in addition to the BBC and CNN, I cannot see that the Doha-based channel poses any threat to getting US policies across. Indeed, I have seen more of Mrs Clinton on Al Jazeera than on any other channel! At a time when a growing number of people think Al Jazeera English should be more widely available in the US, I find Mrs Clinton’s remarks to be misleading and unhelpful.

ORS and Irdeto take action against hack
In a joint effort to combat the recent hack of the Austrian DTH platform, the technical platform operator ORS and Irdeto are implementing ECMs to stop pirate satellite tuners to receive the signals. As a result, over 1.3 million smart cards need to be replaced.

At the same time, the two parties are actively pursuing closure of websites and forums that openly advertise and instruct viewers on how to hack the signal.

ORS has taken the first electronic counter measures (ECMs), that should make illegal reception impossible. Every week, a new code will be sent to all official smart cards. But further measure are needed in order to secure the system for the future. This will in volve exchanging older generation smart cards during the next few months.

ORS is the Austrian facilities company that operates the DTH platform of public broadcasters ORF. The recently launched AustriaSat platform from the M7 Group also makes use of the same technical infrasture and is also believed to be affected by the hack.

When the first reports about the hack surfaced, ORS denied the system was compromised. Now, the operator has confirmed the leak. “It is true that ORF Digital system was attacked by hackers,” ORS spokesperson Michael Weber told the online news service Futurezone.at. “They have illegaly counterfeited the key of a customer card.”

Three older generations of the Irdeto Cryptoworks (formerly Philips Cryptworks) smarts cards are affected by the hack. They are the Cryptoworks generation 4, 5 and 6. These are cards that were sold in reatil in the period between 2003 and 2006.

In order to secure the signal again, these cards need to be replaced since they will no longer work after the necessary security update of the system. It is not unusual for smart cards to become obsolete after a couple of years and a period of 5 – 6 years is actually quite good.

Newer generations of the card will be able to continue to receive the signals. About 1.8 million of these newer cards have been sold. Irdeto acquired Cryptoworks from Philips in January 2006. The technology is completely different from Irdeto’s core technology used in the company’s other smart cards

In this specific instance, we are working closely with ORS to develop a swift and permanent solution to combat the problem. The cards affected have already delivered excellent return on investment to ORS, having been in the field for more than 5 years, which is higher than the industry average. The cards affected use the Cryptoworks technology that Irdeto acquired from Philips in 2006. Cards that are based on Irdeto’s own technology are completely different and not impacted by this attack.”

Chiuso dall’FBI Megaupload (e Megavideo) per violazione del copyright

Il famosissimo sito di condivisione file Megaupload.com è stato oscurato dall’Fbi. I procuratori federali della Virginia, con l’accusa di violazione delle norme antipirateria, hanno così messo i sigilli ad uno dei più usati siti di file sharing.

Con Megaupload è stato oscurato anche il “fratello” Megavideo, usato da milioni di utenti ogni giorno.

Come riportato da The Associated Press, l’accusa è di costare più di 500 milioni di dollari per i mancati introiti causati dalla mancata vendita di film ed altri contenuti. Come riferito dal Washington Post inoltre il network Megaupload è il 13° sito più visitato al mondo, si può quindi immaginare come in poche ore sia divampata la protesta nel web. Su Twitter centinaia di migliaia di utenti stanno dicendo la loro e, con l’hastag #megaupload, anche l’Italia sta partecipando alle proteste. Il sito è di proprietà della Megaupload-Limited, società registrata ad Hong Kong, ed il fondatore Kim Schmitz, assieme ad altri tre dirigenti è stato arrestato.

La decisione è storica, le proteste sono già iniziate e rischiano di divampare in tutto il mondo, il dato certo è che il web da quest’oggi è un po’ meno libero.
